Fifty years ago, Berry Gordy turned his love of music—and an $800 loan—into what would become the most successful Black-owned record label in history. With his roster of talented singers, writers, musicians and producers and songs that broke the color barrier, he made his native Detroit's "Motown a worldwide phenomenon. Gordy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in '90. In honor of the musical empire's milestone anniversary, there are numerous projects set for '09, including a documentary about the company.
